Business Spotlight: Suydam Insurance
In this installment of the Franklin Township Business Spotlight, we spoke with Robin Suydam, Managing Member of The Suydam Insurance Agency to learn about her family’s business, and its growth here in Franklin Township.
What’s the history of Suydam Insurance in Franklin Township?
“Our family name, ‘Suydam,’ is Dutch and means ‘South of the Dam’ back in the Netherlands. We settled in America 340 years ago as farmers in what is now Brooklyn, and made our way to Somerset in 1723. Our office on Route 27 is situated on land that has been our family farm since 1840 and adjacent to our original Somerset settlement. So we can honestly say that the Suydam Insurance Agency is an integral part of Franklin Township’s history and heritage.“
How was the agency started?
“The agency has its roots going back to 1879 with the current agency forming in 1959. In the beginning our clients were primarily farmers –we were insuring friends, neighbors and small businesspeople – today that community has evolved into businesses of all types and specialties run by people who’ve come to Franklin from all over the world.”
What types of services do you provide?
“We’re a full-service agency, providing virtually all types of business and personal insurance. We like to say that we’ve been insuring the businesses of central jersey – and the individuals that make them successful – for 50 years, and we insure the things they need to protect their buildings, homes, vehicles, employees and professions.”
What is it about Franklin that makes it such a unique place to do business?
“We continue to work out of Franklin Township for the same reason that all Franklin businesses do – it’s a dynamic business and residential community, with businesses large and small and residents who have chosen to live here from all over the world.
Franklin is perfectly poised; it’s truly a crossroads of commerce, I mean you’re literally one hour from everything – the Delaware and Raritan Canal, New York City, Philadelphia, Princeton – and you have almost every highway within six miles. In addition, there’s a certain quality of life– a concentration of diverse communities, cultural opportunities, business opportunities, that continues to bring people here from far and wide.
We’re very proud to be part of this community, serving some clients for many generations as well as helping those new to Franklin find the guidance and professional advice they require to grow and succeed.”
